Pupils at Friends’ Prep recently enjoyed their sixth Annual Health and Fitness Week.
Following on from last year’s Olympic Theme the focus changed to the Commonwealth Games. At the beginning of the week, pupils took part in an interactive question and answer session with three local badminton players – Alex Sim, Scott Burnside and David Geddes. Pupils had to research the players, the sport and the Commonwealth Games to prepare for this session. Alex and David shared memories of their Commonwealth Games experiences and pupils were delighted to try on playing shirts and jackets that were worn at the Opening Ceremony.
During the week all pupils took part in badminton coaching sessions and watched a demonstration match between Scott and Alex.
In addition to this, Old Scholar Maureen McCoy spoke to pupils about her recent swim from Dover to Calais! Pupils watched her slide show with great interest and they had many questions to ask!
Talks were also given by Action Cancer regarding healthy living and also by Headways on cycling safety.
During this week each year pupils also consider an aspect of food or diet. This year consideration was given to planting and growing food. During the day each class planted different fruit and vegetables – researching information on their use and how best to grow them!
Pupils will now have to tend to their crop and look forward to sampling the produce! It is hoped that many items may be used by the Foundation Stage pupils when making their healthy break time snacks in school.
An enjoyable week was had by all! Pupils and staff once again thank Mrs Clare Monteith for her meticulous and creative planning!
